Hefty bow for ABC’s ‘Samantha Who?’

ABC now has the season’s two most-watched new show debuts. Last night’s series premiere of the sitcom “Samantha Who?” became the most-watched new program of the season, drawing nearly 15 million viewers, and bettering last month’s 14.4 million for “Private Practice.”

“Samantha” also averaged a 4.5 rating among adults 18-49 at 9:30 p.m., according to Nielsen overnights, holding 92 percent of its “Dancing with the Stars” lead-in at 9 p.m. The 90-minute “Stars” averaged a 4.9 and 20 million viewers in its finale half hour.

That rating could adjust, as “Dancing” may have bled into “Samantha’s” timeslot; overnights measure timeslot data, not actual program data.

But the debut looks quite promising for ABC, which has struggled to find strong new sitcoms the past few years.

“Dancing” and “Samantha” both appeal to a female-skewing audience, with both well ahead of the competition among women 18-49, and ABC finished 36 percent ahead of No. 2 CBS for the night in that demo, with a 6.4 average.

Viewers Discover ‘Samantha Who?’

The premiere of ABC’s “Samantha Who?” overcame mixed reviews and a clunky title to become the highest-rated freshman comedy debut of the fall.

Given a strong “Dancing With the Stars” lead-in (4.6 preliminary rating among adults 18 to 49), “Samantha” garnered a 4.5 rating. That number contains two minutes of “Dancing” overrun, but the show should remain highest-rated among the new comedies once adjusted in the nationals. Among total viewers, “Samantha” was the most-watched premiere of any comedy this fall.

ABC won the night with “Dancing,” “Samantha” and “The Bachelor” (up from last week to a 3.2).

Samantha Rides Dancing’s Coattails

Another night of solid ratings for ABC’s Dancing With the Stars did wonders for the premiere of the network’s new sitcom, Samantha Who?, which followed. The 90-minute Dancing took the night’s top ratings with a 13.2 rating and a 19 share. But Samantha retained nearly 80 percent of that audience, posting a 10.7/15 in the 9:30 p.m. half hour.

    lucy/rory,

    I think you’re a little confused. Yes, GilmoreGirls.org and SamanthaWho.org are sister sites … but that’s it.

They’re sister sites in the sense that they have similar designs, are managed the same way, and occasionally share the same visitors. No one has ever made any claims in regards to Samantha Who? becoming, or trying to replace, Gilmore Girls.

We watch Samantha Who? because we like it; not because we’re trying to convert old Gilmore fans.
