‘Dancing,’ ‘Samantha’ trot to Monday win
ABC came up big on another Monday night with the sitcom “Samantha Who” gliding effortlessly behind proven winner “Dancing with the Stars.”
“Dancing with the Stars” was the night’s top show in both key measures with 21 million viewers and a 5.0 rating/12 share in the adults 18-49 demographic, according to preliminary estimates released Tuesday afternoon by Nielsen Media Research. It was down only slightly from week to week but still ahead of everything else, although CBS’s “Two and a Half Men” (14.1 million, 5.0/11) tied it in rating if not in share.
ABC’s freshman “Samantha Who” (18.3 million, 5.0/11) also tied in the demo although it would take until final ratings are released to see how the shows end up. But in any event, it was a continued strong performance from “Samantha Who,” which last week scored a 4.5/10 in adults 18-49.

‘Samantha Who?’ builds its audience
It’s been a long time since ABC had a promising new sitcom, and “Samantha Who?” is looking better each week. The critically lauded Christina Applegate show posted a series best among adults 18-49 last night, again holding a good chunk of its “Dancing with the Stars” lead-in and performing particularly well among women.
“Samantha” averaged a 4.9 in 18-49s, according to Nielsen overnights, up 7 percent over last week’s 4.6 and holding 84 percent of “Stars’” final half hour lead-in at 9 p.m., which was up 0.1 over the previous week.
The amnesia comedy’s third episode also hit a series high among total viewers with 15.4 million, 1 million more than the previous week.

‘Samantha Who?’ up its second week
Before the premiere of ABC’s new comedy “Samantha Who?,” buyers thought it stood a good chance of becoming the strongest comedy in the Monday 9:30 p.m. timeslot. After two weeks, it appears to be on its way.
Last night’s episode of “Samantha,” its second, posted a 4.6 overnight rating among viewers 18-49, up just a slight 2 percent versus the 4.5 for last week’s premiere. While that might not seem like much in itself, it’s a promising sign for the show. It’s one of the few new shows this season to actually boost its rating during its second week.
“Samantha” also finished first in its timeslot among total viewers with 14.4 million, ahead of the 11.3 million NBC’s “Heroes” averaged in that half hour.

Hefty bow for ABC’s ‘Samantha Who?’
ABC now has the season’s two most-watched new show debuts. Last night’s series premiere of the sitcom “Samantha Who?” became the most-watched new program of the season, drawing nearly 15 million viewers, and bettering last month’s 14.4 million for “Private Practice.”
“Samantha” also averaged a 4.5 rating among adults 18-49 at 9:30 p.m., according to Nielsen overnights, holding 92 percent of its “Dancing with the Stars” lead-in at 9 p.m. The 90-minute “Stars” averaged a 4.9 and 20 million viewers in its finale half hour.
That rating could adjust, as “Dancing” may have bled into “Samantha’s” timeslot; overnights measure timeslot data, not actual program data.
But the debut looks quite promising for ABC, which has struggled to find strong new sitcoms the past few years.
